Phase Change Materials
These are materials that are capable of storing thermal energy. They can be used in various applications from building materials to thermal batteries.
Building materials include phase change renders, plasters and board. These building materials have unique properties and are capable of storing heat energy which is slowly released back into a building acting much in the same way that a high density material would. Due to the unique ability of a phase change material to do this, a building of timber construction, or other light weight build method can achieve the same performance characteristics of that using concrete or other more substantial design.
Thermal batteries are highly efficient stores of thermal energy that store heat energy captured using solar thermal or other heating devices. They are capable of rapid extraction of heat from the medium being heated and equally fast delivery of heat when it's required. This technology offers the potential of efficiently storing heat energy for use at times of day or night that it is most required. Due to its efficient nature the amount of thermal energy required to heat the medium is reduced and fast charging times can be achieved. In combination with solar thermal a thermal battery increases the overall efficiency of a system as, less heat energy from the sun is required as would be needed to heat a large stratified water tank.
